How are these sets being received?

So by now you are probably pretty familiar with what the Smart Play range is. Having worked on the commercial I have been sitting with my thoughts on these sets longer than most. The moment I saw and held the sets on set, I knew these would spark controversy within the Lego fandom. These sets are so clearly meant for children in the age range depicted on all Lego boxes, but I had my suspicions that adult fans would struggle to come to terms with this. I regretfully was right, some in the fandom need to face the reality of what these sets are about.

Unless you are swooshing them around the house, perhaps chasing a sibling or friend as seen in the commercial, they aren't meant for you. They aren't meant to be on a lame IKEA shelf, part of a poorly curated display, and I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but kids aren't all that concerned with accuracy, safety message prints or scale...

It is really funny to see the old phrase 'it's a toy for children' actually be a valid statement for once and watching adults attempt to oppose and argue against this. Again sorry to be the one to tell you this, there is no counter argument. Frankly as an adult collector interested in mostly UCS sets, I can clearly see there is nothing here for me and as usual I treat this as a very welcome money saving exercise. It surely doesn't need to be said that you don't have to purchase Lego, it is in fact a choice you have.

Price is another area in which adults seem to take issue, sighting 'kids can't afford these sets' which simply isn't true. I had plenty of high value sets as a child, I saved pocket money and did chores. Not to mention Birthday/Christmas presents and gift money also, kids can save when they want something. It is not as though these sets are priced in the thousands, sure they can't pick up an entire wave but certainly they are affordable to a degree.

All that is really left to do now is to continue to watch the show on social media, watch as the concept of these sets go right over people heads and the complaints and tears continue...
